I can't remember if I blogged before about my presentation for the Music Business class at Durham College in Oshawa Ontario at the invitation of my friend Marni Thornton. On the basis of that visit, the students invited me to come back out to the college this week to participate in a couple of events.
Thursday night was their annual "Songs Revealed" competition, which runs a bit like "Idol" shows with Jennifer Beavis, Vince Degiorgio and Dan Reiff as celebrity judges and the whole bit. I was the emcee for the event, which was fun, and it was set up that I'd do my presentation about the guitar at the top of the evening and then Rebel Emergency would wind up the evening and use the guitar in their performance while the judges deliberated on the work of the contestants. As it turns out, most of the entrants wanted to use Voyageur for their two-song sets, which I thought was very brave considering they already had nerves to deal with in front of the judges, let alone playing a new instrument. Anyway, they were all wonderful so thanks for a great night. Check the winners here.
The following morning it was back to Durham College to host a workshop as part of the Reel Music Festival. I arrived late, thanks to 401 traffic, but things went really well. I confess it turned into a much more candid and slightly music-industry-bashy kind of talk but it was a great conversation with the students.
Thanks to everyone involved.
