There’s never a problem finding ways to talk about Voyageur and the whole project in the school setting. There are so many different ways in to the story that address so many things of interest to different parts of the school curriculum and school life. What made our visit today to Silver Creek Public School in Georgetown ON so special, I think, was that the school has a few overarching themes and heuristics that tie in perfectly with the Six String Nation: citizenship, active listening, respect for different perspectives - all of which are woven into the fabric of learning every day. Needless to say, this was arguably the best behaved and most attentive school group I’ve ever presented to.
The school also opted to have the portrait feature so we set up after the presentation and did portraits with a representative group of students and then stayed around after school so some some kids could come back with their parents. It was a nice way to do things and we got some great shots. The local school board photographer also came by and got some shots including the one here of a young Habs fan getting his finger on the Rocket's Ring!
The other awesome thing about going to Georgetown in the Halton Region in October is that it requires a drive up Winston Churchill Blvd., which is easily one of the most spectacular winding drives through the fall colours that you can make in Ontario. Get out that way if you can.
Thanks to the staff, students and community of Silver Creek P.S., with a special thanks to Vice Principal Carolyn Lewis for making it all happen and to Tyler Ferguson and Gabriel Nielsen who brought Voyageur to life for their classmates.
