If you've been following the blog, you'll know I've been in Yellowknife since last Friday and managed to pack in quite a bit. But my actual reason for being here was today at the Explorer.
Back in November of 2009, we traveled to Fort St. John, BC to do some school sessions, some portraits and a public presentation and multiple artist show (with the wonderful Dayna Manning and others) at the Lido Theatre. The guy responsible for shuttling us around town was Richard Redfern. Richard was a surveyor by trade and thought the presentation would be perfect for his association's upcoming conference in Newfoundland. We spoke to the organizers and agreed to do the gig but couldn't make it work for St. John's, so we planned eighteen months out for Yellowknife. Today was the day!
It was a wonderfully appreciative audience who had perhaps a better sense than most of the relationship between the land itself and the people moving about on it! And for their guitar-playing ringer, they convinced former NWT Premier Stephen Kakfwi to do the honours. The honour was mine. I've met quite a few musician-politicians by this time and I do believe he had the nicest voice of all of them. Maybe he was right to quit politics for music - wonder if Charlie Angus and Andrew Cash will make the leap back some day?
Thanks to Jean-Claude Tetrault, Jeffrey Fee, Richard Redfern, Stephen Kakfwi, Ryan and Rick on tech, and Matt, Kathleen and Judith from the Yellowknife Book Cellar.
