Like millions of Canadians, I've been riveted to the web and TV today for news about the passing of Jack Layton, Leader of the New Democratic Party and of the Official Opposition in Parliament.
Those who know me know that I was sympathetic to Jack and his brand of politics but my sense of him as a person goes far beyond politics - as it did so clearly for so many people of every political stripe in Canada. He was a genuine person. A real mensch with a real smile and a real ability to connect with people.
Naturally, he was there at our photo session with Voyageur on Parliament Hill but he also simply showed up at an event I held at the Lula Lounge in Toronto in 2006. His enthusiasm for the project was personal and heartfelt and it was an honor not only to put the guitar into his hands but to stand with him for a couple of portraits. His presence in the political arena in Canada was refreshing and inspiring and his absence will be deeply felt. Our deepest sympathies to his family and friends. And to all Canadians who felt, like Jack, that we could have a better, prouder, fairer, more inclusive country - it's up to us to carry on his vision. See the full set of images here.
